Kaela gritted her teeth and took a deep breath. She wanted to settle this quietly, without waking the camp. She stepped forward, her muscles tensing. As the monsters lunged at her, her body moved instinctively. A kick, a punch, a sudden pivot... Every movement carried the weight of years of experience. Yet, that dark voice inside still wouldn't leave her alone. “Why do you fight?” it whispered in her mind. A moment's hesitation turned into a fatal mistake. One of the monsters sank its claw into Kaela’s shoulder. Pain surged through her entire body, and her knees buckled. As her vision blurred, a silhouette emerged from the shadows. “Elira...” Kaela whispered as she succumbed to unconsciousness. Elira’s voice echoed from a distance: “Kaela! Hang on!” Kaela’s eyelids felt heavy. When she regained consciousness, the first thing she felt was a sharp pain. The warmth radiating from the wound on her shoulder seeped into every corner of her body. Her blurry vision gradually cleared, and she found herself propped up against a tree. Elira was sitting beside her, staff resting across her knees. Her face was etched with worry and exhaustion. Seeing Kaela open her eyes, Elira took a deep breath and smiled. "Hey... You're finally awake," Elira said, her voice laced with relief, though the anxiety in her eyes hadn't quite vanished. Kaela tried to force out a few words, but no sound came. Her throat was parched, and the pain wouldn't allow her to speak. Elira held out a waterskin. Kaela stared at the water blankly for a moment. I don't have to drink, she thought. But even this simple gesture warmed a part of her soul. She handed the container back without taking a sip. "What happened?" she whispered. Elira let out a deep sigh. "I found you unconscious when I noticed the attack. I took care of a few of them, but... they were stronger this time. I carried you here, and we moved the camp. You're safe." Kaela gave a slight nod. Safe... The word felt foreign to her. The war inside her never truly subsided. Looking into Elira’s eyes, she felt something break. She was so tired that she wanted to cling to this sense of safety. "Elira..." she said, her voice trembling. "Sometimes this battle... it consumes me. I want to be rid of the monster inside me, but it's always right behind me." Elira’s green eyes shimmered, and there was a moment of silence. Then, Elira leaned her staff against the ground and stood up. She held out her hand to Kaela. "Kaela, you don't have to chain the monster inside you. Maybe you should look at it differently. Instead of fighting against it, maybe you can use it to fight." Kaela looked at Elira’s hand. Taking it felt like breaking her own chains. She reached out hesitantly and grasped Elira’s hand. A warm strength spread from her heart through her entire body. She felt the sting in her shoulder as she stood up, but even that pain made her feel more real, more alive. Elira smiled. "We’ll get through this together. And you won't be alone on this path." Kaela took a deep breath, a faint smile touching her lips for the first time. For perhaps the first time, she felt the chains loosen.
